casa beatnik

i was asked if i'd like to photograph my home for a magazine last week, while i was away. obviously i accepted the huge honour with open arms, which were filled with doughnuts, gin and slinkies at the time, so i dropped them. my friends came round and were my slaves for the day, as they helped style and even sew things in an attempt to make my place look habitable. it took me 8 hours non stop to photograph. i have a new found respect for glossy mag photographers and stylists and will now cackle everytime i see an 'open house tour' in a magazine, as i have more of an incling into what goes into it (including borrowing things and stealing flowers and such). i'm so excited - it really is a girly dream come true to have your house featured in a magazine. it's still a secret which magazine casa beatnik might be in, but i'll whisper it to you as soon as i'm able.

eclectic homes

i've compiled a mood board of homes filled with old vintage finds, hand-me-downs, kist treasures and thrifted goodness to inspire you find the beauty in old things for your home. images from we heart it & design is mine.

jump through hoops

i'd jump through hoops to collect a bunch of lauren's beautiful hoop creations that she keeps making with the grace of a gazelle. i adore her recent hoops which incorporate 4 parts whimsy and 1 part slang :) you can order your own by emailing her on lulafowler@gmail.com

winter give away

remember that we're still giving away these beautiful ceramics with orders of over r550, placed directly though me! so don't hesitate - take a look at all the gorgeous goodies available in the online shop and place your order by mailing me at beatnikbazaar@gmail.com.

wine tasting

my friends and i went wine tasting in the hemel and aarde valley near hermanus last weekend, making a planned lunch stop at la vierge. i'd been planning a longer visit to this exquisitely positioned winery ever since writing about it a few months ago and after sampling many of the delicious wines on offer at the hermanuspietersfontein market, we crawled up the valley road towards our destination. set amongst the vineyards viewed through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the restaurant at la vierge offers a winning combination of nouveau cuisine, delicate wines and a mesmerising setting.

hearth fair

i want to have fun at the hearth fair this weekend in stellenbosch, which seems as though it's a combination of the slow food market usually held on saturdays, and a craft market.

it was me holiday

the cast of í love you, you're perfect, now change

the cast of i love you with the cast of cinema wow, starring 'the dahlings'

i'm back from the national arts festival in grahamstown where i had a ball, saw my friends and family and saw tons of shows. there are still two weeks left so you have time to take leave and go up, it's so worth it. my cousin's show named 'big boys don't dance' and my friend's show 'í love you, you're perfect, now change' have both garnered wonderful reviews and have even won awards already!

grahamstown ahoy!

my friend laura and i decided to drive to grahamstown for the arts festival, upon a whim over breakfast on sunday morning. we drove until almost 11pm before we reached our accommodation which is at an old jail that has been converted into a backpacker. we sleep in a little jail cell on lock down every evening! we've watched 2 shows so far, including my cousin's husband's brilliant dance comedy named, 'Big Boys don't Dance,' which received a standing ovation.

a beauteous evening

the miss texas 1977 gig last night at speedways was entrancing and magical. i was so proud of lauren when she surprised us all and sang some songs with the band as one of their special guests for the evening. eventually the band jammed with 5 extra friends on drums, keyboards, vocals, guitar and bass. lauren also made the monochramatic garlands strung across the stage, because she's giving like that.

miss texas

miss texas 1977 and friends are playing at speedways tonight. i received this email from them and had a laugh: Get your butt down to Speedways to check this unique gig featuring many amazing friends (Abbey Hatcher, Lauren Fowler, Simon van Gend, Joshua Grierson, Ross Campbell) joining in with their voices, body parts and musical appendages. We end the night as a seven piece band committing musical hedonism ! Wear sunglasses so we don't have to see you crying with so many feelings of love and drunkenness.

beatnik interiors

i've been gathering inspiring beatnik images of rumbly tumbly vintagey interiors created by people who don't have enough money, nor the desire to employ decorators and to buy expensive 3 piece suites but rather find beauty in mismatching objects found at markets and borrowed from friends and family.

hoops of love

inspired by my friend lauren fowler's embroidery hoops which i ordered from her, i've put together some pictures of other cool hoops. contact lauren about a commission. images are taken from 'we heart it.'
