richard hart at WITW

richard hart starts his exhibition at what if the world gallery today. i smaak his art, big time, cos it smacks of black humour to me, and with art and design often severely lacking a sense of humour, this is refreshing. art usually takes a while to grow on me, but this was love at first sight. check it out here.

design indaba

one of south africa's biggest design events has opened this week and is a heavenly showcase of local talent. most local successful designers and artists have been discovered at this event and i can't wait to overload my senses with all the magnificence. check out their official website here.

Excerpt: Creativity that knows no boundaries. That's what Design Indaba Expo is all about. Elegant lamps made of ostrich feathers; recycled milk bottle caps assembled together in flower mobiles; funky jewellery made from old-fashioned silverware; sophisticated laptop bags crafted from old billboard vinyls. These are just some of the ideas that have wowed the crowds over past years – as well as hundreds of influential buyers from across the globe.

Now in it's sixth year, Design Indaba Expo promises to outdo itself in showcasing South Africa's best in advertising, architecture, craft, décor, film, fashion, graphic design, interior design, jewellery, furniture, industrial design, new media, publishing and product design – all under one roof.

fertility festival

belle & boo invitations

the next big holiday coming up is easter, which is otherwise known to me, as the festival of fertility, celebrated around the full moon on the eve of spring in the northern hemisphere. it should actually be easter here in september, but alas, we never did found our own identity here in the southern hemisphere. inspired by symbols of fertility, being rabbits and eggs moulded out of chocolate, the mayan food of gods, these symbols are light and fun ways of celebrating the blossoming of the earth. flora and fauna get that collective loving feeling and bring about new life-they bring about creation. and creation is ultimately godly, therefore spring is truly the most important festival to celebrate, in my mind. and here in the southern hemisphere, we can do it twice! inspired by all things fertile, i've out together a little dream board for the feast that i often hold at my house, to celebrate this beautiful festival.

easter egg hunt

bliss!

firstly, i'll send out the invitations in my belle & boo bunny cards, lay out a magnificent and magical alfresco lunch area, create a feast, hunt for easter eggs, and finally collapse on the couch with a chocolate pot, teaspoon and a grin.

long street

yesterday, for an article i'm composing, i walked the old familiar parts of long street that brought a day long smile to my face, remembering all the time i used to spend there when i was younger. a usual evening used to follow pretty much the same order: pickwicks, stones, joburg, the lounge or cool runnings and marvel. the next day, a need for a gourmet burger would always be fulfilled, with shopping cravings satiated by misfit, milk and journey. i used to live one road away from long street, and work on long street, so it brought back memories of a wonderful, free time in my life, a crazy hedonistic headspace, laughter, dancing, foolishness...what fun.

mystical golden light

i had a wonderful birthday weekend, with at least one birthday wish coming true.. (shhhhhhhhhh) and this morning my son went on his first school outing, to kalk bay's dalebrooke tidal pool, which had a mystical golden light shining down on it. the photo's came out beautifully. i spent the rest of the day in cape town collecting stock and starting my article on long street.

howz dem apples

these buttons from remakables are just so gorgeous

and this piece from fabric rehab, makes me hungry for the sweet deliciousness

the red and green apple wrapping paper i've just finished ordering from nineteen seventy three, reminds me of this beautiful print in a home that i saw on the mid century modernist blog. apples were very popular in design in the 60's with prints appearing on cushions, curtains, ceramics and dress fabric and apple pendants, brooches and necklaces were iconic 'young' 60's and 70's.

belle & boo

a long time fan and admirer of belle & boo, today a little dream of mine has been realised and another 'dream' product range from my initial 'dreamboard' is now going to be in beatnik bazaar! wrap, cards and prints in the stunning belle & boo range from nineteen seventy three. check out belle & boo's blog here. arriving in march............

bazaar and flea market style

now take your flea market finds and....

i bought a book called 'bazaar style' recently and wrote a post about it and i'd love to get the book, 'flea market' style too because beatnik bazaar is all about mixing it up. these styles blend periods, eras and different style decades together, to create warm and fun environments to live. check out my own take on bazaar style....to me its about mixing retro and vintage, antiques and 60's kitsch, handmade and broken, vinyl records and old tapestries, displaying it all creatively and changing it up after every flea market binge!

a beautiful life

now thats what i'm talkin about!~today, the weather is so beautiful, i was prompted to capture some photo's for my article on kommetjie. wish me luck, i'm going to view a cottage there today!
